The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS) today said that the foreigners’ problem cannot be resolved through violence and asserted that it is only through the update of National Register of Citizens (NRC) that a permanent solution to the problem can be fetched.
The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS) today said that the foreigners’ problem cannot be resolved through violence and asserted that it is only through the update of National Register of Citizens (NRC) that a permanent solution to the problem can be fetched.
The Samity has urged all the political and non-political organisations to put pressure on the State Government to update the NRC within two years in the State. However, the KMSS demanded that in BTAD area, the NRC should be updated within a year.

An all-party meeting was held today at Kokrajhar Circuit House with Dr Bhumidhar Barman in the chair. The meeting discussed over the restoration of peace and normalcy and adoption of confidence-building measures among all sections of the society in aftermath of violence in BTC.
The meeting took opinions and necessary of recommendations from all parties and democratic organizations on the current situation for bringing back a peaceful atmosphere.

Barpeta situation under control
Situation in Barpeta, which witnessed violent incidents during the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU)-sponsored Assam bandh yesterday, was totally under control today. However, tension is still prevailing in some parts of the district, said Minister Nilamani Sen Deka, who is monitoring the situation there.
Meanwhile, 50 persons have been arrested in connection with yesterday’s incidents of violence in the district.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday came down heavily on the Tarun Gogoi Government for failing to check the violence that marred yesterday’s Assam bandh sponsored by the All Assam Minorities Students Union (AAMSU).
BJP national vice president Bijoya Chakravorty said that the Tarun Gogoi Government has no right to be in power after what happened yesterday in different parts of the State.

A three-member ministerial team from Meghalaya that visited Bangalore, Pune and Mumbai on a goodwill mission today urged the students and working professionals from the State to return and resume their studies and work without apprehension.
The team comprising ministers—Abu Taher Mondal (Power), Alexander L Hek (GAD) and Ampareen Lyngdoh (Urban Affairs) assured the parents and the working professionals of safe ambience there after they were convinced about the security measures being promised by the governments of Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Leader of the delegation AT Mondal told newsmen here that they held meeting with the Deputy Chief Ministers of the two States. “Our on-the-spot assessment also was satisfactory,” he said.

BJP MP Bijoya Chakraborty ask govt to ban AAMSU
BJP MP Bijoya Chakraborty said the Tuesday’s violence in many parts of the State was orchestrated by the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU).
Addressing reporters here on Wednesday, the veteran BJP MP said the State Government should ban the AAMSU without any delay. “Tuesday’s violence in the State was pre-planned and it’s a dangerous sign,” Chakraborty said.

Assam Public Works (APW) filed writ petition
The Supreme Court on Wednesday registered the writ petition filed by the Assam Public Works (APW) against the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP) on July 25. In the writ petition, APW appealed to the apex court to issue an order or direction to NHPC Ltd. for releasing the minimum sustenance flow natural water of 450cu3m/sec from the SLHEP dam all through the year for ecological sustenance of the river which will keep the river ecologically healthy specially in the 4-5 months of lean period of the winter. The APW has urged the Supreme Court to intervene in this issue and pass the necessary orders.

The State Government has taken a decision to ban bandhs in the State for the next one month.
Following the violence in different parts of the State during Tuesday’s Assam bandh called by the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU), the government decided on Wednesday that all bandhs would be banned in the State for the next one month.

The decision was taken at a crucial meeting between State ministers and leaders of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) administration which was held at the Kokrajhar Circuit House on Wednesday afternoon. It was chaired by Prithvi Majhi. BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary was also present at the meeting.

Dulal Bora and Dipen Rahang filed a writ petition against All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal in the Gauhati High Court on Wednesday. The writ petition was filed against Ajmal for making sensitive statements before the media for his political benefit. The petition stated that Ajmal’s statements agitated the people of Assam as well as other parts of the country, thereby creating a chaotic situation in the country. Bora and Rahang appealed to the court to restrain Ajmal from giving more sensational and communal statements in order to provoke people. The court will hear the petition on Friday.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel carrying out a search operation to fish out the body of Vineet Jain in the Brahmaputra at the Kharguli area in Guwahati on Tuesday.
