Posters adorn the pillars of the Six Mile flyover in Guwahati. This is not the lone example of defacement of public property. Posters are pasted on public walls and other public property without the permission of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). Public property, it seems, has become advertising space for companies. The Guwahati Prevention of Defacement of Property Act was passed in 2006 to prevent defacement and destruction of public property. Under the Act, anyone found guilty of defacing public walls and other property can be punished under Sections 262 and 265 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. However, with the GMC turning a blind eye to all the posters on public property, these companies are having a free run. These companies should be made to bear the cost of getting all their posters removed from public property and pay for using public property as advertising space. Will the GMC commissioner take note of this? (Sentinel)
