Traffic came to a standstill for hours together in Guwahati on Monday during the rallies organized by the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC) and the Nationalist Students’ Union of India (NSUI) in protest against the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) for "spreading canards" against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and the AASU unit of Gauhati University and 26 indigenous organizations against illegal immigrants. Commuters suffered as vehicles remained stranded on the road for hours. Students and office-goers were the worst hit. The beleaguered people of Guwahati are of the opinion that such rallies should not be allowed to be organized in the city. (Sentinel)
